This is a pretty common piece of advice. When you start shopping for a heating or cooling system, a smart dealer will tell you that the air conditioning installation is absolutely critical. A lot of folks come back with questions, but the primary question is this:

“Is it really more important than the brand?”

The short answer is yes. The long answer is a bit more nuanced. Read on to hear the rest.

About brands, and why they definitely do matter.

No one is going to tell you that you’ll get the same performance as a Carrier or Trane or other top brand if you buy a cheap replacement. But in that top tier, where the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) ratings are all similar, all of the systems are honestly pretty good. What will separate them, at that point, far more than the name on the chassis, are the installing contractors.

This is because, put simply, Tampa HVAC companies are competitive. Any system worth buying will have a 10-year warranty. So while you absolutely do want the comfort of selecting a brand well known for their quality, you’ll also want to take the air conditioning installation process very seriously.

Before you get to the point of sale, you’ll have already gotten an estimate on prices and performance from a professional. When speaking to a dealer, make sure you’re keeping more than the price tag in mind.

About the air conditioning installation, and why it possibly matters more.

Congratulations, you’ve chosen an excellent system. Why are you being told that the installing contractor matters as much as this decision? Because it’s a complex process, and a bad contractor can actually ruin it for you. Your satisfaction, over time, will depend on a good installation.  Let’s tick off a few reasons why:

Breakdown and failure rates will be higher with a bad install. Maybe they didn’t check the wiring, maybe they didn’t recommend the right air filters, maybe they didn’t size the air conditioning system properly or take your ductwork into consideration … whatever the reason, your system could end up working too hard and its lifespan will be shortened.

Energy bills are higher with a bad install. If anything is done incorrectly, from sizing to insulation, you’ll be venting cooling energy out, maybe into an attic or crawl space, or you’ll just have a system that runs too often. Either way, your bills are going up.

Comfort levels are higher with a good air conditioning installation. Again, those same factors are in play. An incorrectly sized system or a system that isn’t properly installed and maintained will lead to issues, most commonly with dehumidifying. And, as anyone can tell you, humidity equals discomfort.
